Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone, naturally produced by the peritubular cells of the kidney, that stimulates red blood cell production. The swine erythropoietin (EPO) cDNA encodes a protein of 194 amino acids. The gene structure and sequence show a high degree of homology to the corresponding human and murine gene. Erythropoietin is the primary erythropoietic factor that cooperates with various other growth factors (e.g., IL-3, IL-6, glucocorticoids, and SCF) involved in the development of erythroid lineage from multipotent progenitors.
