Kline — a family member of a sailor killed aboard the battleship during the December 7, 1941 attack at Pearl Harbor — to identify the 85+ unknown crew members buried in commingled graves at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii. Frustrated that official agencies were not actively identifying these unknowns despite advances in DNA technology, Kline started Operation 85 on April 6, 2023. The project focuses on locating surviving family members of the missing crew and collecting their DNA reference samples so remains can be identified through modern forensic methods. Kline has largely funded and led the effort personally, building a team of volunteers and experts to drive the mission.
