The Problem of Kabul Serena Hotel: The setting of concrete is a chemical reaction of cement and water and accelerates due to temperature. As the temperature falls down, the rate of chemical reaction falls down, and the setting process becomes slower. In normal practice, the initial setting time of concrete is a minimum of 30 minutes, and the final setting time is 600 minutes. But in cold countries where the ambient temperature goes below zero degrees Celsius, concrete does not set at all. In cold weather concreting, water undergoes freezing and hence cannot take part in the chemical reaction with cement and hence cannot develop compressive strength due to lack of hydration. Plasticizers are used to reduce the water-cement ratio, whereas anti-freeze admixtures are used to prevent ice formation.
