Lionesses Playing

Dr Somdutt Prasad stopped in Kenya on the way back from the UK to Kolkata for a 5 day break at The Maasai Mara, to enjoy wildlife and photograph them. He was lucky enough to see Lions Cheetahs and Leopards in their natural habitat. Lions often live in large prides, and will show great affection for each other. These pictures and video are from a large pride of 20+ lions. They basically hunt, eat and relax! What a life.

The Jungle Heirarchy

Dr Somdutt Prasad18 May, 2018News

We saw a Cheetah feasting on its kill in the fading light one evening in Masai Mara, off the Porini Lion Camp. So next morning we went early to check the site out. The Cheetah was nowhere to be seen, but vultures were feasting on the remaining flesh. The law of the jungle. But then a Griffin Vulture, who was perched at a slight distance away, decided to fly in for his share, lo and behold, the other vultures were frightened and flew awayThe jungle has its hierarchy!

The Tawny Eagle

Dr Somdutt Prasad18 May, 2018Travel

This bird of prey (Aquila Rapax) is found in most of Africa, Southwestern Asia to India. It is closely related to the migratory steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis), but is not actually a migratory bird, preferring to stay resident, favouring open dry habitats such as desert, semidesert, steppes, or savannah plains. I was lucky to catch some good views of this large bird during my recent trip to Kenya.

The Grand Mosque – Abu Dhabi

Also known as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, this Mosque has many special and unique elements: It is designed to use natural light at its best, and clearly the architects studied the light and designed well, which makes it a dream to photograph.

Fig - the Leopard

Dr Somdutt Prasad18 May, 2018Travel

Fig is a leopard who is resident in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Kenya, where the Porini Lion Camp is situated, she is sighted quite often. Leopards can be difficult to sight, but this one goes out to hunt for her cub very often. We saw the cub on our first evening there, hidden away amongst foliage. In the fading light and the shadows of the foliage, I had to raise the ISO to 11000, still getting a nice shot @f4, 1/500 seconds on my Nikon D500 and 300mm f/4 PF ED VR lens handheld.

Dr. Somdutt Prasad — Was there life before Facebook 360? A...

Some thoughts on panoramic photography by yours truly, Somdutt Prasad, with examples extending from Liverpool UK, to Masai Mara, Kenya and Sikkim, India. Over the last decade technology has made amazing strides, especially in the field of panoramic photography. Today, cameras will make panoramas with a series of shots and assemble them in camera for you. Or better still, go live on Facebook 360 and turn your phone around and it will broadcast a live panoramic view for your friends or public (whoever your target audienceare)and voila it is there for all to see. Convenience wins over quality everyday, for example as consumers we choose convenience of a smartphone camera, although we know that a dedicated camera (SLR or equivalent) will give better results. As the user base grows, more and more technology is brought to bear on the user friendly alternative, the smartphone in this case, and some of this technology makes its way back to the serious gear the DSLRs and Mirrorless top en

The superb starling

Dr Somdutt Prasad18 May, 2018Travel

Somdutt Prasad is back from the Porini Cheetah Camp, Masai Mara, Kenya bringing beautiful pictures and videos from Masai Mara. Here is the first of the series on Masai Mara. We were at the Porini Cheetah camp, Masai Mara, Kenya. As in most safaris, late morning is not a good time to see the mammals, as they all are resting in the shade, and even if they can be spotted are inactive. With the harsh flat light of the overhead sun, this is also not the best time to photograph them, so as we were returning for a late breakfast we started looking for birds. We were lucky enough to see this very colourful and bright bird feeding, off course one of the best times to photograph birds is when they are feeding as they tend to hover around the same spot, and also the worm (or other food), in the beak, adds to the punch of the shot. The superb starling (Lamprotornissuperbus formerly called the SpreoSuperbus) is a common bird in East Africa, including Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia and
