Progesterone, also known as pro-gestation, is a hormone that is necessary for the development of an embryo. An empty sac is left behind when your ovary follicle releases an egg during ovulation. The empty follicle sac seals itself off and forms the corpus luteum, a mass of cells. Its role during preconception and the early stages of pregnancy is to produce progesterone. The progesterone from your corpus luteum is working to prepare the uterine lining by thickening and maturing it before the egg nestles into your uterus. The corpus luteum will continue to produce progesterone during and after conception. Around seven to nine weeks of pregnancy, the placenta will start producing enough progesterone on its own.
