Zakat on cattle

Conditions Necessitating Zakat on Cattle 1- Lapse of a full year while the animals are with the owner due to the Prophet’s statement ﷺ: “There is no Zakah on any property until a year lapses.” [ Source: Ibn Majah] 2- It must be grazed livestock. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Of grazed camels, out of every forty camels a she-camel that is two years old is to be paid.” [ Source : An-Nasai] A grazed camel is that which is fed by eating from plants of the earth and permissible grass i.e. that which grows by Allah’s command without being cultivated by anybody. However, if it feeds on cultivated crops; then it is not regarded as a grazed camel and Zakah is not due on it. 3- It must be kept for some benefit, either from its milk or offspring, and not used as a working camel.

The Ruling of Zakah on Merchandise It is compulsory due to Allah’s statement: “O you who believe spend of the good things which you have (legally) earned” (Al- Baqarah: 267). The majority of scholars have declared that the motive of this verse is Zakah on commercial goods. Allah also said: : “Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth.” (At- Taubah: 103). The money used in business is one of the most manifest wealth; it is therefore imperative to pay Zakah on it.

The Ruling of Zakah Concerning the Two Currencies(Zakat on gold and silver) It is obligatory, due to the statement of Allah Almighty: “And those who hoard up gold and silver and spend them not in the way of Allah, announce unto them a painful torment.” (At-Taubah: 34). The Prophet ﷺ said: “The owner of gold or silver who does not pay the poor their dues (Zakah), will have a bitter punishment on the day of resurrection. Plates of fire will be beaten out for him; these will then be heated in the fire of hell and his sides, forehead and back will be ironed with them. Whenever these cool down, the process will be repeated throughout a day whose extent will be fifty thousand years until judgment is pronounced among the servants, and he sees whether his path is to take him to Heaven or Hell.” [ Source: Muslim]

Firstly: Grains and Fruits Definition of grains and fruits Grains Any grains that can be stored, e.g. barely wheat and so on. Fruit Any fruit that can be stored e.g. dates, raisins and almonds. The Ruling on Zakat of Grains and Fruits Zakah on grains and fruits is compulsory, because Allah (Almighty) says: “…but pay the due thereof on the day of their harvest.” (Al-an-am: 141); and due to the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: “From that which has been irrigated by the skies (rain) and streams or that which is ‘athariyy[ Athariyy: One which is self-irrigated either through its roots, rain, flood water or streams], one-tenth is paid, and as for that which was irrigated by An-Nadh[ An-Nadh: Irrigation by watering and close monitoring of plant growth], half of one-tenth is paid.” [ Source: Bukhari]

The Status of Zakah in Al-Islam Zakat is an obligatory act of worship and is also the third pillar of Islam. Allah Almighty said: “And perform As-Salat, and give Zakah” (An- Nur: 56). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Islam is built on five pillars: bearing witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, performing as-Salat (the five daily prayers), paying Zakah, going on Hajj (making pilgrimage), and Saum (fasting in the month of Ramadhan).” [ Agreed upon]

Itikaf rules in Ramadan

Permissibility of Al I’tikaf Al I’tikaf is one of the most virtuous deeds and an excellent form of obedience. ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “ The Prophet ﷺ used to seclude himself (in the mosque) for the last ten days of Ramadan until his death.” [ Al-Bukhari .] Al-I’tikaf is enjoined on us as it was joined on those before us. Allah Almighty says: “... and We commanded Ibraheem and Isma’eel that they should purify My House (the Ka’abah at Makkah) for those who are circumambulating it, or secluding (I’tikaf) or bowing or prostrating themselves (there in prayer.)” (Al-Baqarah: 125).

Laylatul Qadr (the night of Qadr) in Ramadan

Merits and the Position of Laylatul Qadr 1- The Qur’an was revealed on that night. Allah Almighty says: “Indeed, we revealed the Qur’an on Laylatul Qadr.” (Al Qadr: 1) 2- It is better than a thousand months. Allah Almighty says: “Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months.” ( Al Qadr : 3). This implies that: The reward of any righteous deeds performed in the Laylatul Qadr is better than the reward of those (righteous deeds) performed for one thousand months not including Laylatul Qadr. 3- Therein the angels and Ar-Rooh (Jibreel) descend. Allah Almighty says: “Therein descend the angels and Ar-Rooh by Allah’s Permission with all decrees.” (Al-Qadr: 4).

Days on which Supererogatory Fasting is Recommended 1- Six days in the month of Shawwal (after the month of Ramadan) The Prophet ﷺsaid “Whosoever fasts the month of Ramadan and thereafter follows it up with six days of fasting in Shawwal, it will be recorded (altogether) for him as a complete year of fasting.” [ Source: Muslim.] It is the same if he does it consecutively or spreads it over the entire month.

Permissible Reasons for Breaking Fast in Ramadan 1- Sickness It is permissible for the sick to break fast in Ramadan. Allah Almighty says: “... but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number of days (should be made up) from other days” (Al-Baqarah : 184). The sickness that permits the breaking of fast is the one that causes or leads to a more serious pain, if the sick were to fast.
