SKULL BASE TUMORS

Uciheadandneck12 Apr, 2022Health

A skull base tumor forms under the brain, or between the brain and skull. Most of these tumors are non-cancerous, but their location near the spinal cord and brain can make them serious health problems. The symptoms of a skull base tumor vary based on its size and location. Early stage symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, and changes in hearing or vision. More serious symptoms develop if the tumor pushes into nerves or the brain. Serious skull base tumor symptoms can include double vision, total loss of hearing or vision, difficulty swallowing, cognitive changes, facial paralysis, and compression of the brain. It is important to be evaluated by your ear, nose and throat doctor if you have these symptoms.

Diving, whether it?s competitive or something you do occasionally, can place added pressure on sensitive parts of your inner ear. This extra pressure may affect your balance and result in problems in the inner or middle ear area. Divers, in particular, are more susceptible to developing a condition within this part of the ear referred to as a perilymphatic fistula (PLF).

Sudden Hearing Loss

Uciheadandneck22 Nov, 2021Health

A sudden loss of hearing is considered an emergency and should not be ignored. Even a slight change in hearing level that occurs suddenly should be evaluated as soon as possible. In many cases, the condition is caused by something simple, such as a plug of ear wax or fluid behind the tympanic membrane caused by allergies, but it may also be the result of a serious medical condition that requires immediate treatment.
