About Michael De La Maza

I'm Professor of Business Analytics and Machine Learning at Hult International Business School, where our MBA program ranks in the top 20 for entrepreneurship according to Bloomberg Businessweek. My research asks why high-potential management teams underperform and what actually fixes it. I hold a PhD in Machine Learning from MIT. I founded three companies in the 1990s, and since 2011 I've run Immaculate Conception Ventures, with four unicorn investments made at seed stage. I'm one of roughly 100 Scrum Alliance Certified Enterprise Coaches worldwide. I also compete as a master's long jumper, currently top 25 in the USA for my age group.

One of my consulting clients in legal recruitment gave an AI the same instructions their staff had used for two decades to categorize lawyers' resumes. It matched human accuracy almost perfectly, far faster and at a fraction of the cost, and dozens of jobs were eliminated.

On day one of my two-week Algorithmic Trading elective I tell the students that none of the techniques work, because if it were as easy as taking a two-week class you could beat the market. We use Python to learn from market data, and I spend real time on backtesting, because it is very easy to fool yourself testing a strategy on the data it was built on.
