Dont be a cupcake colleague

Mentally Wellthy26 Oct, 2022Health

Today we?re just over half way through National Mental Health Month, an initiative focused on raising awareness of Australian mental health. I personally love and celebrate opportunities to draw attention to mental health but a recent event has me concerned that some may be paying little more than lip service to improving mental health in our workplaces and communities.

How this company created a safer and more inclusive workplace

There could be little argument that the pandemic has impacted businesses but for one such business it has been a catalyst for a new way of connecting and supporting each other. MSD Australia & New Zealand (MSD) has introduced a network of Mindwell Champions which they believe has contributed to creating a safer and more inclusive workplace.

Asking for Help

Mentally Wellthy23 Jul, 2022Health

One of the greatest lessons I have learnt in my life is one that was passed down from my grandmother, to my mother, to me. (And I?m not talking about their excellent fudge recipe!) Allowing someone to help you is giving them a gift. Let me say that again. Allowing someone to help you is giving them a gift! Now, I invite you to think about this for a minute before discounting it. A lot of people instinctively feel that asking for help is being a burden to others, or a sign of weakness and that we should be able to look after ourselves.

Why we need to consider team resilience

Mentally Wellthy04 Jun, 2022Other

Have you ever contemplated team resilience ? How do you create supportive teams that thrive and that foster, rather than compromise, the resilience of individual members? Much of the literature around resilience focuses on the individual and overlooks that we operate within a system. Unless there is alignment between group norms and practices and what each person needs to maintain their resilience, the best actions of the individual can potentially be negated and even decimated.

Why We Need a Systemic Approach to Resilience

Mentally Wellthy23 Apr, 2022Other

When we think of resilience, we often think about a person?s individual capacity to bounce back in the face of adversity, or their ability to cope with whatever life throws at them. What if I was to tell you that there is so much more to resilience, and lots of things we can do to improve our own resilience at work and that of our team?

Creating a Healthier Workplace Through MHFA

Mentally Wellthy07 Mar, 2022Health

When superannuation fund, QSuper, decided to introduce an internal network of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders) in early 2020, they had no idea how perfect their timing would turn out to be. Less than two months later Covid-19 threw the world, workplaces and workers into turmoil. Never has it been more valuable to have people in your team who understand mental illness and who can confidently recognise and support a struggling colleague or customer.

Mental Health Speaker

Mentally Wellthy24 Feb, 2022Health

Mentally Wellthy partners with organisations to improve employee wellbeing, safety and performance. It?s time to address the elephant in the room ? mental health problems are real and they will impact every organisation to some extent. 65% of people with a common mental illness don?t seek treatment but help seeking increases with encouragement from those around them. The right support can fast track an employee?s return to thriving and strong performance at work.

Responding to the Unthinkable

Mentally Wellthy17 Feb, 2022Health

You hang up the phone in total shock. You never saw it coming. An employee?s relative has just informed you that one of your team won?t be coming back to work ? Yesterday they died by suicide. This a call you never want, or expect to receive, yet with eight Australians dying by suicide every day (and that?s pre-Covid), this is a call that many leaders across our country are needing to respond to. I was asked to provide advice on this scenario a few months back when an HR contact found herself responding to the suicide death of an employee whose position had been made redundant some months earlier.

Can any of us Afford not to have these Skills?

Mentally Wellthy08 Feb, 2022Health

Often at my talks I will ask the audience to put up their hand if they, or someone they know, has experienced a mental illness? Almost every time, every hand in the room goes up. Take a moment to reflect on this question yourself ? Chances are that the answer is yes, given that 45% of us will over our lifetime. That?s almost half of the population yet how many of us know how to identify and respond to someone experiencing a mental illness?

Mental Health Training For Employees

Mentally Wellthy28 Jan, 2022Health

Mental health awareness training equips participants with a greater awareness of mental illness, an understanding of the symptoms and signs of common mental illnesses, including suicide, and the steps for supporting a colleague who may be experiencing the impacts of an existing or emerging mental health problem.
