Diphtheria is an infection caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Signs and symptoms may vary from mild to severe. They usually start two to five days after exposure. Symptoms often come on fairly gradually beginning with a sore throat and fever. In severe cases a grey or white patch develops in the throat. This can block the airway and create a barking cough as in croup. The neck may swell in part due to large lymph nodes. A form of diphtheria that involves the skin, eyes, or genitals also exists.

Under regulations set out by the World Health Organization (WHO), anyone traveling to a country or area where the Aedes aegypti mosquito is found must have the vaccine or have an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). You can find a list of all the countries that require you to have an ICVP in the WHO International travel and health guide. You can also search the country information on NaTHNaC to find out whether the places you are visiting require an ICVP.

Travel Vaccination Clinics are very important and provide some protection. You should still take care with food, drink and personal hygiene when aborad. When you have your check-up at your local surgery, it’s a good idea to review your medical history, present state of health, medications and any allergies. Keep your immunisation certificates (and list of current medication) with your passport for use during your travels and as a record for the future.

Severe hay fever is an unpleasant allergic condition that can be a real problem for extreme sufferers, especially in certain parts of the UK where the allergen count tends to be high – whether it is flower pollen (such as rapeseed) or tree pollen (such as silver birch). Apparently, there are 3 billion trees in the UK, that’s 47 for every Briton. Our doctors and Regent Street Clinic™ will evaluate the most suitable treatment option for all severe sufferers and will give practical advice on measures you can take to lower the burden of high pollen counts. We also offer advice on allergy testing, using immunotherapy medications and seeking help from consultants in allergy medicine. We look forward to helping you to manage your debilitating condition, as we have done over the past 25 years.
