Susmita Bagchi (n?e Panda) is an Odia writer who writes in Odia and English. She has published numerous books of novels short-stories and travelogues. She is the daughter of Sakuntala Panda, a prominent Odia writer an founder of Odia women's monthly Sucharita. She is best known for her short story collection Akasha Jeunthi Katha for which she won Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992. She is currently heading the Mo school programme. She wrote her first short story for Sucharita 1982. Her first short story collection Akasha Jeunthi Katha was published in 1990.She followed up with Chhai Sepakhe Manisha. Her Odia novel ?Deba Shishu? was about children living with cerebral palsy, It was published in 2006. Nityananda Mahapatra (17 June 1912 ? 17 April 2012)was an Indian Odia politician, poet and journalist.He was imprisoned three times by the British Raj between 1930 and 1942 for nationalist activities.He came to literary prominence as editor of the Odia magazine Dagara, and as a short story writer after independence. Chemmeen tells the story of the relationship between Karuthamma, the daughter of a Hindu fisherman, and Pareekutti, the son of a Muslim fish wholesaler. The theme of the novel is a myth among the fishermen communities along the coastal Kerala State in the Southern India. The myth is about chastity. If the married fisher woman was adulterous when her husband was in the sea, the Sea Goddess (Kadalamma literally means Mother Sea) would consume him. It is to perpetuate this myth that Thakazhi wrote this novel. It was adapted into a film of same name, which won critical acclaim and commercial success. Chemmeen won the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, India's second highest literary prize, in 1957.
