Vantage Point Sharjah, an annual photography exhibition at the Sharjah Art Foundation, has returned for its eighth instalment, with more than 30 photographers from 20 countries taking part. The photographers were selected through an international open call, a recent development in the Vantage Point Sharjah initiative, which only accepted GCC applicants until last year. The foundation has not only extended Vantage Point?s geographical reach, it has also broadened its thematic criteria, allowing applicants to submit their own styles.
Featuring the work of over 30 photographers and artists selected through an international open call, the exhibition presents a variety of approaches including collage, analogue photography and digital manipulation. The selected images tell stories of personal experience and community life, and offer reflections on the human condition, captured landscapes and nature as well as imagined futuristic scenarios. The participating photographers are Elaheh Abdolahabadi, Katya Akuma, Raheed Allaf, Sundos Alsheebani, Armin Amirian, Gheed Ashoor, Marwan Bassiouni, Abdelhamid Belahmidi, Hasan Belal, Renata Siqueira Bueno, Santiago Velez and Jack Yong, and more.

?I utilize ubiquitous and overlooked objects in my artworks. I find discarded leather to be an extremely rewarding element because of its sensory qualities and ability to trigger emotions. Recycled leather acts as a metaphor for a personal repository of complex memories, traceable through one?s olfactory senses.? says Akuma.
Katya Akuma rallies support from the fashion industry for Project Destiny, a social justice campaign to help raise funds and awareness for the fight to end sex-trafficking. The activist and founder of Council for Fashion and Social Change, Katya Akuma, uses her connections to facilitate another fashion partnership to support anti-trafficking nonprofit organizations.
