Alternator Replacement becomes necessary when the alternator stops properly charging the battery while the engine runs. Common symptoms include dimming or flickering headlights/interior lights (especially when idling or using accessories), illuminated battery or charging system warning light on the dashboard, sluggish engine cranking or no-start after the vehicle has been driven a while (battery drains quickly), whining, grinding, or growling noises from the front of the engine (failing bearings or pulley), erratic electrical behavior (power windows slowing, radio cutting out, AC weakening), a burning rubber or electrical odor near the engine bay, or the battery dying repeatedly even after recharging. Alternators typically last 100,000–150,000 miles but can fail earlier due to belt issues, heat, or overload.
