There are two explanations behind the symbolism of the Flag of Barbados. Both explain that the broken trident symbolises the break, or independence from England. The three points of the trident represent the three principles of democracy - government of, for and by the people. Simultaneously it symbolises the sea god Neptune and reflects the sea's large significance for Barbados.Where they differ is in the body of the flag. One belief is that the stripes symbolise the blue sea and the golden sand that encircles the island.
