Signal, an app for sending encrypted messages, said it would stop working in the UK if a new law made encryption less safe. Meredith Whittaker, president of Signal, told the BBC that the company would leave if the Online Safety Bill forced it to make its messaging system less private. The government said its plan was not an “end-to-end encryption ban.” Boris Johnson put forward the bill, which is now going through Parliament.

At an EU competition hearing, Microsoft defended its plan to buy Activision Blizzard, which makes games like Call of Duty and Candy Crush. Microsoft thinks the $68.7 billion (£56.8 billion) deal will give gamers more options. But Sony, a competitor that was also at the hearing, says that the merger would give Microsoft too much power over some of the most popular games in the world. Sony owns PlayStation, a major competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox.

Yahoo is the most recent tech company to lay off workers. Companies are having a hard time right now because demand has dropped, inflation is high, and interest rates are going up. Yahoo will let go of almost 1,000 tech workers by the end of the week because of its latest round of layoffs. Yahoo is owned by Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm which bought it for $5 billion in 2021. The company said the move would help it focus and invest more in its DSP, or demand-side platform, which is its most important ad business.

About 46,000 homes have lost power as Cyclone Gabrielle hits the north of New Zealand. Authorities have warned of heavy rain and wind, and hundreds of flights have been canceled. Some places have declared a state of emergency as Cyclone Gabrielle moves closer to the North Island. It happens just a few weeks after four people died in floods caused by record rainfall in and around Auckland.

In 2022, profits will reach $39.9bn (£32.2bn), twice as much as last year and the most in its 115-year history. Since oil and gas prices went up after the invasion of Ukraine, energy firms have made more money than ever before. Indian billionaire Gautam Adani lost more than $20 billion (£16 billion) on Friday when investors left his companies for a second day because a US investment firm said they were scams. The Adani Group said that the report was not true, but that hasn’t stopped everyone from getting angry. India’s main opposition party has asked for an investigation. About $50bn has been taken off the market value of the company’s publicly traded companies. Friday, shares of Adani Enterprises, the largest company in the group, fell by nearly 20%. Some of the group’s other publicly traded companies saw their shares drop even more, and they were no longer traded in Mumbai. Forbes says that Mr. Adani has dropped from being the third richest person in the world to the seventh, even though his estimated net worth is still more than $96 billion.

Twitter Inc. is introducing a new plan to entice brands to return to the social media network, which has seen its ad business decline since Elon Musk’s $44 billion buyout. According to emails from The Wall Street Journal, the internet company is dangling free ad space by offering to match advertisers’ ad spending up to $250,000. According to the emails, the entire $500,000 in ads must run by February 28.

Pietro Beccari, who is going to be CEO of Louis Vuitton, is being replaced by Delphine Arnaut, who is 47 years old. Before becoming an executive vice president at Louis Vuitton in 2013, Delphine Arnault was the Deputy Managing Director of Dior for 12 years.
