Skin cancer is the single most common type of cancer in the United States for both men and women. Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the outermost skin layer, the epidermis, caused by DNA damage that triggers mutations. These mutations cause skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. The main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). The main causes of skin cancer are exposure to the sun?s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and the use of UV tanning beds.
