Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) is a flowering plant species belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is native to Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Pennyroyal has been used since ancient Greek, Roman, and medieval cultures. Pennyroyal has a strong, fresh, minty, herbaceous scent similar to spearmint and was used for centuries to flavour food, wine, and teas. Ancient medicinal uses of pennyroyal included stimulating menses and, in higher concentrations, inducing abortion. Pennyroyal oil was also widely used as a potent insect repellent.
