The vast majority of Western scholars who call themselves Indologists approach ancient Indian texts with skepticism, viewing them as objects to be exploited. Most scholars have attempted to understand Indian texts from a purely historical perspective. Their efforts in studying the text focus on answering questions such as when was the text written? Is there one author or multiple authors? Can the original text be recreated before redactions and interpolations? Can the stages of interpolation be identified along with their underlying motivation? and so on. This framework views the text through a lens of skepticism, viewing it as an object to be manipulated and dissected to create speculative historical narratives. He completely ignores the commentarial tradition that has studied the text from a philosophical perspective for more than a millennium, dismissing it as subjective and partial and the product of prejudice and superstition.
