Number Sense is the Foundation of Math Skill

A strong foundation provides the support needed to build. Often, when children say they hate math, the truth is that they have been trying to learn math in a fragmented, out of context manner, which is both confusing and frustrating. Developing number sense provides the foundation for extending math learning to increasingly more complex topics. And it starts with counting - the �ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number, both forward and backward�. Once students have a solid foundation in counting, this thinking of numbers in groups of various sizes directly applies to the basic math operations that are so predominant in our school math.
