Diwali is celebrated since ancient times in India. It is a festival that is celebrated after the summer harvest of the Hindu calendar month of Karthikai. The festival of lights is mentioned in the Padma Purana, SkanaPurana and various other ancient Sanskrit scriptures. Most popularly Diwali is celebrated as the victory of good over evil. The popular belief is that when Hindu Lord Ram defeated evil King Ravan and returned to his kingdom Ayodhya then at that time people celebrated the day by lighting diyas. Since then every year, on a new moon day people celebrate the festival of lights called Diwali.
