Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that affects the plasma cells in the bone marrow. Plasma cells are a type of white blood cell that produce antibodies. Multiple myeloma can cause a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, bone pain, and recurrent infections. Diagnosis is typically made with a combination of physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation, and medications to manage symptoms. With treatment, many people with multiple myeloma can achieve remission (when there are no active cancer cells). Some people may need ongoing treatment to control their disease.
