Arabinose is an aldopentose - a monosaccharide containing five carbon atoms, including an aldehyde (CHO) functional group. For biosynthetic reasons, most sugars almost always exist in nature in the "D" form, or structurally similar to D-glyceraldehyde. However, L-arabinose is actually more commonly found in nature than D-arabinose and is found in nature as a component of biopolymers such as hemicellulose and pectin.
