In a 2016 study on the toxic properties of ibogaine, researchers from New Zealand determined the substance can be lethal in laboratory mice at a dosage equivalent to 263 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. The mechanism of death was irreversible damage to specific neural networks and brain cells that interact with the respiratory system. Because of its stimulant properties, ibogaine is contraindicated in patients who live with certain cardiac conditions.
