Historical particularism emerged in the early 20th century as a critical response to classical evolutionism in anthropology. Pioneered by Franz Boas, this school of thought challenged the unilinear evolutionary models of classical evolutionists like Lewis Henry Morgan and E.B. Tylor, who proposed that all societies pass through universal stages of development.
