Constrained layer damping is an automotive engineering method for suppressing dampening vibration caused by the formation of strain on the surfaces of a component. Typically a rigid or semi-rigid damping membrane, often sandwiched between two pieces of stiff yet non-damp materials, lacks enough damping on its own to dampen the vibration formed by the components' dynamic environment. When added to the moisture already present, the combined effect of two different damping materials results in damping that exceeds the ambient moisture levels by a large margin. This damping phenomenon is known as hot spots.
