A bone growth stimulator is a supplemental device worn following cervical (neck) or lumbar (low back) spine surgery. It generates an electric current meant to encourage bone growth. It uses ultrasonic or pulsed electromagnetic waves. It is used during bone growth stimulation, a therapy used following a spinal fusion procedure. The growth hormone/IGF-1 system stimulates both the bone-resorbing and bone-forming cells, but the dominant effect is on bone formation, thus resulting in an increase in bone mass.
