This reddish paramagnetic solid is an intermediate in the hydrometallurgical purification of cobalt from its ores. It is an inorganic pigment, and a precursor to catalysts.[4] Cobalt(II) carbonate also occurs as the rare red/pink mineral spherocobaltite.
