Citronella is a perennial aromatic plant native to tropical Asia that belongs to the Poaceae family. As its name implies, the citronella plant is the source of citronella essential oil, which is widely used as an effective, natural insect repellent. Citronella oil has a distinctly crisp and fresh aroma that is floral and citrus-like. It contains unique phytochemical compounds, including geraniol, limonene, trans-methyl isoeugenol, geranyl acetate, and borneol, responsible for its potent antimicrobial, anthelmintic, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, and wound-healing effects.
