The name of the city is derived from the 6th Lord of Fairfax of Cameron named as Thomas Fairfax who was awarded abundant land in North Virginia by King Charles. The area included in the city of Fairfax now was settled in the early times of 18th century by farmers from Virginias Tidewater area. By an act of the state legislation, the town of Providence was established at the site in the year 1805. The first and second battles of the Civil war took place here on June 1, 1861, and June 27, 1863, respectively.
