As the sun set beneath the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple, I found myself in a wondrous place in Chiang Rai. The air was thick with anticipation and joy as locals and visitors alike gathered to celebrate one of Thailand's most cherished traditions: Loy Krathong. This traditional festival, celebrated on the full moon in the 12th month of the lunar calendar, is a time when people honor the Water Goddess by releasing artfully made krathongs, or floating lanterns, onto rivers and lakes. My personal Loy Krathong experience in Chiang Rai was nothing short of enchanting, filled with bright hues, meaningful traditions, and a strong feeling of togetherness.
