Split rings, which serve as attachment points for hooks and, from the main eyelet, to your leader, should be replaced as soon as they start to manifest any signs of rust. Also, if the split rings have become deformed under a load or have started to twist open, replace them immediately. Better a few minutes of work replacing a damaged split ring than a lost trophy.
