When you are not of British descent, you have to apply to the Home Office to go through the process of British naturalisation if you want to become an official citizen of the UK. Once you have obtained British citizenship rights through British naturalisation, you get to apply for a British passport, live and work in the UK without any immigration controls, and gain voting rights. However, you have to meet the naturalisation criteria for the application process.
