Twenty or thirty years ago, designing and building an outdoor deck was a very straightforward affair. First, the selection of materials was limited. Almost all decks were constructed using a few carefully chosen hardwoods, such cedar and pine, which are naturally resistant to insects and the elements. There was also pressure-treated (PT) wood available at the time, but the variety was relatively small.
