Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a vein and blocks the flow of blood. It can be life-threatening and is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in the United States. The two main types of VTE are deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs, and can cause pain, swelling, and redness.
