The body produces thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and clogs the pancreas. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is fatal, and people with this condition have a shorter life expectancy than normal. Sixty years ago, many children with CF died before reaching primary school. However, progress in treatment means that people with CF often live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond. There is currently no treatment for CF. It affects approximately 30,000 people in the United States, with 1,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Of these new diagnoses, 75 percent are made in children under 2 years of age. CF is a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system but can lead to life-threatening complications such as liver disease and diabetes.
