An API is an Application Programming Interface. In real-world terms, it is a way for applications to talk to one another. In practice, it is a way for data to be transferred from one service to another. Using public APIs on a homepage is a great way to get more data on the page, not only for you but for your potential customers. For example, if you only had access to Google Analytics, you wouldn't necessarily have access to Facebook or Twitter data. Another example is Facebook has a public API that allows developers all over the world to build applications that can access Facebook?s data.
