An anal abscess is an infected, pus-filled cavity near the anus or rectum. An anal fistula is a small tunnel created from an opening inside the anal canal to an external hole in the skin near the anus. A fistula often results from a previous or current anal abscess. About 50% of people with an abscess develop a fistula. However, a fistula can also occur without an abscess.
