What is a Pioneer Species and its Examples?

Buzz Enviro07 Jul, 2024Environment

A pioneer species is usually the first plant or microbial species to colonize an infertile ecosystem. These resilient species also are the first to re-establish themselves in ecosystems that have been destroyed by natural disasters such as fires and deforestation. Once established, pioneer species help to restore the ecosystem to a more hospitable state for later species by stabilizing the soil, enriching nutrients, reducing light and wind exposure, and moderating temperature.
