What exactly is permaculture?

Permanent Culture, also known as Permaculture, was originally intended as a self-sustaining agriculture technique in which agricultural systems have been designed to require little, or no, outside human intervention. In current usage, this word refers to a holistic approach to creating self-sufficient as well as environmentally balanced human settlements that reduces our reliance on industrial production as well as distribution networks and encourages synergy and otherwise harmony among the many components of our own immediate surroundings.
