Whiteheads: These are small, flesh-colored or white bumps that appear on the surface of the skin. They occur when a pore becomes clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Blackheads: These are similar to whiteheads but have a dark appearance. The dark color is not due to dirt but is caused by the oxidation of melanin (skin pigment) when the clogged pore is exposed to air.
