What are IoT & M2M & How Do They Communicate?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term that refers to physical items that have sensors, processing power, software, and other technologies incorporated in them. They use the Internet or other communication networks to connect and share data with other devices and systems. A fantastic example of an IoT device is your smartphone. Machine-To-Machine (M2M) refers to direct connection between devices through any communication channel, including wired and wireless. This can involve industrial instrumentation, which allows a sensor or metre to connect the data it collects to software that can make use of it. The utility smart metre in your home is an excellent example of an M2M device by that definition.
