In municipal wastewater operations, the processes for primary and secondary treatment are separated by a combination of physical and biological processes. During the primary stage, organics, oils and fats are removed, and solids and suspended solids are filtered. In the secondary stage, a mixture of chemical and biological processes is employed to eliminate suspended solids and quinolone antibiotics. Biochemical processes include decomposition and incorporation into microbial communities. Another process, known as activated sludge, is based on microbial oxidation of organic contaminants.
