V-belt sheaves and pulleys are used to transmit rotational power to a shaft by mounting compatible V-belts in their V-grooves. Variable-pitch V-pulleys can adjust the groove width or pitch to accommodate speed changes. Stepped V-belt pulleys have multiple grooves of different diameters to allow for speed variations. V-belt idler pulleys maintain belt tension and keep the belt away from obstructions. The use of carbon fiber as the tensile cord in V-belts provides increased horsepower rating for greater power density and compactness. Variable pitch sheaves are used in V-belt drive applications to adjust the pitch diameter for desired speed by opening rotating parts by half or full.
