Understanding The EEOCs Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA)

Supreme Trainer25 Jul, 2024Education

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), enacted to address gaps in existing protections for pregnant workers, mandates that covered employers provide reasonable accommodations to employees affected by pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. The PWFA builds upon the rights granted under the Title VII Civil Rights Act of 1964, which already protects employees from discrimination based on pregnancy. However, the PWFA goes further by requiring employers to proactively offer accommodations to support pregnant workers, such as modified work duties, more frequent breaks, or temporary changes to job responsibilities. This legislation aims to ensure that pregnant employees are not forced to choose between their health and their job security, thereby promoting a healthier and more equitable work environment.
