Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal imbalance that occurs during the reproductive years in women. Some of the common symptoms of PCOS in women are irregular periods and excess of the androgen hormone in their bodies. PCOS causes numerous tiny fluid sacs to form along the ovary's outer edge. These are known as cysts. The small, fluid-filled cysts contain immature eggs. These are called follicles. The follicles do not routinely discharge eggs.
