To understand retrograde motion in astrology, we first need to explain its astrological basis. Celestial bodies, including the planets, usually appear to move in an orderly easterly direction against a background of stars as seen from Earth. This movement is called progress or direct motion. However, at certain times, the planets slow down, stop, and then retrograde for a while before resuming their forward motion.
