The need to cut costs and make inspection systems more reliable than manual methods has driven the development of under-vehicle scanning systems. The objective was to replace the traditional mirror-on-a-stick method of searching under cars for bombs and contraband in order to facilitate both civilian and military law enforcement. The capability to identify attached objects of various sizes and shapes, as well as suspicious objects, has driven the development and implementation of such UVSS systems.
