Similar to Iran, Turkey produced and continues to produce today rugs in multiple levels of sophistication - nomadic, village, city and court. While early Turkish rugs stemming from the sixteenth century favored the popular design of an arch at one end of the field indicating the direction of Mecca for the faithful, the best-known Turkish rugs today include Anatolian, Sivas, Oushak, Hereke and Kayseri.
