Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure used to treat spider and some varicose veins by injecting a solution into the vein, which irritates the lining of the vessels. This causes the veins to close and normally fade away within 2- 4 weeks. This procedure has been used in the treatment of spider and varicose veins since the 1930s. Modern techniques including ultrasonographic guidance and foam sclerotherapy are the latest developments in this evolution.
