The retina is the light-sensitive inner layer of the eye that forms images and then relays them to the brain. This is similar to the photographic film of a camera and is critical for vision. Retinal detachment is a condition in which the retina separates from the underlying layer, losing its functional capacity. A retinal detachment causes an abrupt and severe loss of vision and, if not treated appropriately, can result in blindness, eye shrinkage, and disfiguration.
